Mathman 19 - Santa's Stash Sam Brandt, Sara Bader, and Josh Schuster

Students and parents of students should read my introduction to letterboxing before seeking the boxes.

Be sure to read through all the clues before looking for the boxes so you know what is expected of you.

Clues:
Each line/square on the graphs represent one unit. Always align the y-axis of your graphs with north/south and the center of the needle with the y-intercept.   You may wish to make all the graphs before going to the park.  You can also convert all the directions from the graphs to bearings beforehand by placing your compass over the graphs and reading the bearing the line points at.

Enter Rotary Park on the north side of the park from Fond du Lac Avenue.  Park on the south end of the parking lot near the bathrooms.

 1) Start at the Pohl Rotary Shelter. This is where Santa would come to have his little polka parties and cookouts in summer. Stand under the sign and graph this inequality: Y < -2x + 1/2 Follow the direction of this line off the top of the graph approximately 160 paces. (You end up reaching a large parabola or catenary curve.) 2) Graph this next equation: Y = 1/4x + 3 Follow the direction of this line off the left of the graph approximately 110 paces. 3) Graph this next inequality: 3(4 - 2x)  < -7 Follow the direction of this line off the bottom of the graph approximately 90 paces to a metal pole. 4) Graph this next equation: Y = 7/4 x - 1 Follow the direction of this line off the top of the graph approximately 25 paces. 5) From there, take a bearing of 160 and walk until you end up in the middle of the area where Santa plays his favorite game: "Reindeer _______"  Go to the east pit. 6) Graph this next equation: Y = -2x + 2 Follow the direction of this line off the bottom of the graph approximately an 1/8 mile to a place where Santa would sit with Mrs. Clause and relax.(Hint: There are 3 big evergreens near it). 7) While resting, take a bearing of 350 and look in the distance for an arch.  Walk to it and cross it.  Stand on Santa's arrow.  Does the arrow point the way to go? 8) Graph this next equation to find out! Y = -6/5 x + 3       Follow the direction of this line off the bottom of the graph until you get to a large metal and stone structure and write down who it was devoted to and why. 9) Graph this next inequality: y > -1/2x + 2/3       Follow the direction of this line off the left of the graph to find Santa’s workshop. Once you finally get to Santa’s workshop go to the back. Santa’s stash was under the bush near the root of the tree, but due to people that might get coal in their stockings and possible flooding, he had to find a better place to hide his stash. 10) Graph this next equation: y = |x| - 4 From the front door of Santa's workshop, walk on a bearing of 348 degrees until you run into a large tree with the shape of the graph you just graphed.   Look in the vertex to find Santa's stash! You must be good and put the box back in it’s place and covered well or else you will get coal for Christmas!
