Shake Hands With Yourself

Megan excitedly SHAKES HER OWN HAND!!

What To Do?

Extend your right hand into the round mirror.  The image of your hand will be reflected in the mirror as the opposite hand, appearing as if you are shaking your own hand!  Also, observe the reflection made by the protruding backside of the mirror.

What's Going On?

The concave mirror is made of unsilvered glass.  The front surface and the back surface of the glass reflect nearly equal amounts of light.  Therefore, you see two images of your hand. Neat, huh??

What is the Purpose?

From this exhibit one can observe the properties of reflection and refraction caused by the curvature of a mirror.  The differences between concave and convex mirrors can also be explored.
